    The characteristics of the shell type transformer become relevant in the upper range of large power substation transformers. The active part configuration, with the magnetic core enclosing the windings, provides robustness to short circuit and transportation efforts, and compactness of the design to match transportation and hauling restrictions.

    Vertical coils with flexible arrangement high-low voltage provides excellent cooling performance and a high serial / low ground capacitance, thus a uniform distribution of voltages along the turns.

    Phase-shifting transformers help control the real power flow in transmission lines and systems interties

    Existing transmission systems are often operated and stressed to the limit of their performance capability of their original design in order to maximize asset utilization. To ensure that under these conditions the economical, reliable and secure operation of the grid is maintained, the need for various aspects of power flow management within the power systems is becoming evident. Phase-shifting transformers help control the real power flow in transmission lines and systems interties. They allow for better utilization of existing networks concerning load growths.

    高压直流换流变压器

    The HVDC converter transformer is a very important component in a HVDC transmission system. In addition to its normal application to provide transfer of power between two voltage levels, it serves a number of additional functions like galvanic separation between the AC and DC systems. A fairly large tapping range permits optimum operation also for a large variation in load without loss of efficiency.

    The converter transformer is generally built with two valve windings of equal power and voltage ratings. One of the windings is connected in star and the other in delta. With this arrangement the dominant harmonics from the converter will be cancelled out.

    The HVDC converter transformer can be built as three-phase units or as single-phase units depending on voltage and power rating. When built as three-phase transformers there is generally one unit with the valve winding arranged for star connection and the other unit for delta connection. In single-phase design the two valve windings are generally built on the same transformer unit.

    Design wise the internal voltage distribution from the DC-voltages on the transformer valve terminals will need a different insulation build-up as compared to the insulation system in a conventional transformer.
